Our aerobics class finally began the other day.
The girls from aerobics class, with me & Courtney
One of the SOS girls visiting happens to be a certified aerobics instructor, so the timing was perfect.
By US standards, the class was semi-disastrous, considering that poor form abounded and the workout was sub-par. However, I can honestly say it was the most fun I have had since coming here.
Imagine the scene—Courtney (teammate), Amber (SOS girl), and I, in our workout gear.
Six local women, half in ill-fitting athletic wear, half in their “sheetkas” (dresses),
tucked up above their knees. A man accidentally walks in,
women dive for cover, shrieking but laughing.
Bad 80s music playing from tinny speakers. Large echo-y room, windows
covered with newspaper to deflect male eyes. Exercise balls.
Resistance bands. Women who’ve never seen exercise balls or resistance
bands, much less actually used them. Women who’ve never done a jumping
jack, trying to figure out the right combination of arm and leg
movements. Sit-ups on the exercise balls. Women rolling right off the
exercise balls. Finishing with the Macarena. Warning of sore muscles
tomorrow.
To sum it up: Three white girls try to teach six African women a very
silly American form of exercise. Hilarity ensues. Culture crossed,
language barrier bridged. Love. Beauty.
