We took a fun team trip this past weekend, to a city about an hour
away called Harar. It's a very old walled city that a little bit
touristy. It was just supposed to be a relaxing "getaway" sort of day
trip so we really just drove around the city, stopped at some scenic
overlook spots (it's up in the mountains), and walked through the
walled part of the city a bit.
The real highlight though: the hyena feeding. Definitely a tourist
trap of sorts, but also for sure a once-in-a-lifetime experience.
There is a man who has conditioned the hyenas near his home to come
over the hill onto his property every night to be fed. He has a bucket
of raw meat, whistles to let them know he's ready, and over the hill
they come, one-by-one. He even has names for them. The biggest one is
known as "Baby."
So the gimmick is that you pay the man a little money and he lets you
sit next to him to feed the hyenas. You put a stick in your mouth, and
he drapes some raw meat over the other end. The hyena slinks up and
gently pulls the meat from the stick, a mere 10 inches from your lips.
Surprisingly, up close & face to face hyenas sort of look like teddy
bears... until they open their jaws (according to Damon the strongest
jaws of any mammal) and you see the rows of gleaming fangs.
Photographic & video proof forthcoming, as soon as I figure out how to
send them...
